There is nothing like sailing. In Croatia, the blue seas of the Adriatic will make you fall in love with the country and you will know right away you chose correctly. Although the sailing experience will take you to incredible places (check the 13 reasons why sailing is the best way to travel), the journey could be quite a challenge if you are sensitive to motion because of seasickness.

SAILING IN CROATIA | SEASICKNESS TIPS

There are some things you can do to minimize the effects of seasickness:

1. PLAN YOUR ITINERARY CAREFULLY

There is nothing that can help you more considering seasickness than to plan your Sailing Holiday in Croatia Itinerary carefully. You don't want to be out in the open sea when strong winds or thunderstorms are present. Be sure to plan your itinerary regarding the weather conditions. Check everyday wind conditions on www.windy.com and follow the local thunderstorms on www.lightningmaps.org.

Sailing in Croatia is usually pleasant and smooth, but sometimes the weather can surprise you. Be prepared and don't worry about the seasickness at all. Don't fight the strong winds and thunderstorms while sailing in Croatia, moor up in a safe bay and have a glass of excellent local wine instead. Already tomorrow the weather will be more favourable.

2. CHANGE YOUR ITINERARY IF NEEDED

With more over than 15 years in the Sailing Croatia Holiday business, we do always put safety first. Nevermind are you sailing Croatia by yourself (bareboat) or with our professional Skipper on board, do not hesitate to change the itinerary to have a more smooth and relaxing holiday. Croatia is a country with more over than a thousand islands and you can always find a substitute port or bay to spend the night. If you are surprised by rough weather while on open sea, change your course downwind and surf the waves to the next safe place to be.

3. SIT AT/BY THE HELM

If you are feeling seasick while Sailing in Croatia, probably the best thing you can do is to sit at/by the helm. This way you are most likely out in the fresh air and looking forward on the horizon (or one steady point of the island). This will help your brain to find the balance and understand what is going on.

4. FIX YOUR GAZE ON THE HORIZON

Seasickness is a sensory mismatch of sorts. Your body receives different messages from your inner ear, eyes and body. By looking out onto the horizon, you find the general stability seen is tempered by swells in the ocean that are picked up by your peripheral vision. This whole picture of the environment makes more “sense” to your brain and avoids the mismatch of sensations.

5. KEEP HYDRATED

Keeping hydrated is a really important tip, not just to combat seasickness, but to give you a strong and healthy body. When you sail, you are usually exposed to a lot of wind and sunlight. As beautiful and fascinating as this might be, it’s also the perfect recipe for getting sunburnt and sick. The recommendation is to drink around 2 litres of water per day, something close to 8 glasses will make all the difference in your sailing experience in Croatia, trust us.

6. AVOID READING ON BOARD

Everyone loves a good book, right? Right?! One of the major causes of seasickness is the inability of the body to marry up the general movements of the sea with stationary surroundings on board. Adding to this struggle with attempts to focus on the words of a page is really not going to help. Instead, try a talking book or podcast to take your mind off things.

7. GINGER

Raw, candied or brewed in a tea – there are a number of ways you can take this simple home remedy. The best bit is that it’s cheap, delicious and can easily be worked into your diet at sea (or you could try the Die Hard approach and just swallow slices whole – not recommended). Ginger has been used to treat seasickness for centuries and is believed to have first been used by the ancient Chinese. Nobody knows exactly why ginger is so good at treating seasickness, but multiple studies around the world have found it can reduce or prevent it altogether. If you’re not in love with ginger, you can take ginger capsules instead.

8. TAKE THE MEDICATION

There are many seasickness medications which are fairly effective (Dramamine and Bonine being the most well-known). But bear in mind that they can sometimes cause drowsiness, and it’s certainly not great to feel drowsy while on a boat. Be sure to take them at least one hour before getting onboard.

9. CHOOSE A CATAMARAN

Choose a catamaran for your Sailing Holiday in Croatia. The choice of your sailing vessel will greatly impact your stay at sea. Usually, the bigger the boat, better the overall feeling of stability on comfort. In that department choosing a catamaran is the best option, since they are built with the purpose of providing maximum comfort while sailing the seas. They have a twin hull for added stability and are incredibly spacious. The sails don't even have to come up and you can be quite content while motoring along the Croatian coast.
